He was born on July 5, 1977 in Yeşilyurt, Cyprus. Can Kara, whose father and mother are teachers,
graduated from Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Architecture, Department of City and Regional
Planning in 1999, and completed his master's degree in Izmir Institute of Technology, Department of
City Planning in 2003.

He returned to Northern Cyprus in 2004 to take part in the United Nations-supported bi-communal-
bi-regional Nicosia Master Plan team. In addition to this project, he worked on many different

international projects such as NATURA2000, SAVE-GIS (USAID supported), Solid Waste Landfill Project
(EU supported) and so on. He received the Aga Khan Architecture award for his Nicosia Master Plan
works.
After completing his doctoral studies at the Faculty of Architecture at Eastern Mediterranean
University in 2013, he worked as a part-time faculty member at Eastern Mediterranean University. He
carried out the TÜBİTAK-supported "Famagusta Urban Life Quality Research", Kyrenia Municipality
Girne-Çatalköy Zoning plan and Famagusta İskele Yeniboğaziçi development plan studies.
He has been working full time at Near East University Faculty of Architecture since 2017. Assoc. Dr.
Can Kara teaches courses on Urbanism, Residential Area Planning and Design, and Geographic
Information Systems. He has publications on these subjects on many different platforms. He is a
member of the KTMMOB Chamber of City Planners and the representative of the Chamber of Urban
Planners of the High Council of Monuments of the Department of Antiquities.
